Corjito La Suerte

Cortijo la Suerte sits on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, surrounded by a timeless landscape of terraced fields, orchards, olive groves and picturesque white villages. The magnificent vista takes in the steep-sided valley of the Rio Trevélez and the rugged ridges on the far side.

After an active day of hiking and exploring the local villages, you can take a swim in the pool, relax on the pool terrace then enjoy dinner and a drink on the roof terrace – this is the life!

Access is via a private road we share with the neighbouring farmers. It is about one kilometre long and half of it is unsealed, but suitable for normal cars. A fourwheel drive is not needed . It takes five minutes by car to go to Pitres and the walk is about twenty minutes.

The house is set up to take advantage of every season, with a roof terrace to enjoy the winter sun or summer evenings under the stars. Downstairs, a shaded terrace provides a perfect place for breakfast and alfresco dining, and a cool retreat from the summer sun. A wood-fired stove keeps the living room cosy warm in winter, and at night you can snuggle up in front of it. The central heating system and floor heating upstairs should not be used as main heating for a building that is not isolated to modern standards. Doing so would cost you a fortune!

On the upper floor, the spacious main bedroom has a double bed, washstand, picture windows and doors opening onto the terrace. The second bedroom has two single beds and there is the new bathroom next door, with washstand, bath and toilet. Downstairs, a second bathroom has another toilet, a wash basin and an unusual semi-circular shower with a beautiful view over the valley.

The roomy, well organised kitchen is right next to the dining area, so several people can prepare and share their meals together (we love to cook ourselves!). Fresh food, gourmet ingredients and local specialities are all available at the supermarket, bakery and village market in nearby Pitres.

Separate from the main building, the Cortijo’s annex is a self-contained unit with a double bed, its own shower, toilet and romantic, secluded terrace. It’s ideal for a couple who want to have a holiday with a group of family or friends, but still need some personal space.

The Cortijo’s private swimming pool is fantastic in summer. The mountain climate is cooler than the coast, but is still hot enough to enjoy a dip in the summer months. Our guests use the pool as an outdoor entertainment area, with its sun terrace and comfortable lounge chairs. Children love the pool, but parents should be aware that it is quite deep and unfenced – children must be supervised carefully unless they are good swimmers who understand water safety. Apart from this, there is no problem with children having fun outdoors – the house is in a secluded location with no passing traffic. Due to the steep terrain and unprotected staircases it is not suitable for toddlers.

Cortijo la Suerte is an environmentally friendly house. Our own spring supplies fresh water and the waste water is managed on site with our own septic system. We are not connected to the electricity grid – the house is powered by solar panels, an inverter and battery storage system, backed up with a silenced petrol /LPG generator. The hot water comes from solar collectors. The stove and central heating run on bottled propane gas.

Living in an ecological friendly house requires amazingly little adaptations to your normal lifestyle. The habits you (should) have at home are more important here: do switch off the lights, don't leave tap water running. In Spain water is very limited so try to use as little water as you can! Also very important: don't throw chemicals or grease in the sink or the toilets, it could stop the natural process in the septic tank!
